My home desktop pc HP dx2000 MT suddenly not functioning after I access to it using Remote Desktop. Its running on WinXP SP2. Its a known issue.

Download and install "Microsoft Windows XP SP2 Fix for RDC Audio Redirect Failure (Q886199)" from HP Driver website for your model.

Example :

Linux - convert Ext2 to Ext3

This is commands to convert Ext2 to Ext3. This example if using volgroups

# tune2fs -j /dev/vgname/lvname

or if using disk /dev/sda

# tune2fs -j/dev/sda

If something wrong happened, such as unable to bootup after converted.

Like what happened to me : "kernel panic, unknown ext3 partition"

Convert back from Ext3 to Ext2.

- boot up system using "rescue" mode from installation cd

# tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/vgname/lvname

# e2fsck /dev/vgname/lvname

- reboot

Compaq 6910p brightness problem-solved

Problem: Unable to increase screen brighness on laptop HP Compaq 6910p. Operating system Windows XP.

Cause : In XP, Ctrl & [Fn] button is mixed-up. Left Ctrl is actually [Fn] button.

Solution : To increase screen brightness, press Left Ctrl + [F10]. Press many times until screen brightness indicator appear on screen.

SLES10 - VNC Remote problem

Something went wrong on my SLES10-SP1 vnc connection.
I can only get a basic grey VNC Connection when I connect to the server using vncviewer.

Note : uninstall all vnc* first if neccessary

1. Login via SSH to the server
2. Start Yast. Choose Network Services - Remote Administration - [x] Allow Remote Administration.
3. Choose to install tightvnc etc when asked.
4. Quit Yast and run # rcxdm restart

Then run vncviewer to the server's ip eg; 192.168.0.156:1

Forwarding Remote Desktop

I require forwarding of a remote desktop because a pc with windows XP is in different network segment than my laptop. In between, there is a linux server which is accessible by both my laptop and that XP pc.

To enable a Remote Desktop Connection, first I must log in to the linux server using Putty.exe via ssh connection. Set tunnelling in putty like this,

L1234 192.168.200.10:3389

From my laptop, connect to XP pc with Windows Remote Desktop application to 127.0.0.1:1234

Note :
The key is not to configure using the same port number 3389. In this example, I use port 1234.

Streamline SATA driver for HP CQ40

I am trying to install win XP on a HP CQ40 laptop which was actually build for Vista.
First problem is that it will not be able to detect a SATA hard disk. You can try to disable SATA in BIOS but my CQ40 does not come with that option.

I had to download a SATA driver and then try to integrate it into existing winXP cd. A process called streamlining. Need to have:

1. SATA driver file
2. nLite program
3. WinXP CD
4. blank CD and an ISO burner software

SED-insert quotes symbol

SED (stream editor) is a program to replace text in a file. Its easier to use VI, but sometimes, VI program is not available. Like in my case, I logged into z/Linux Server from Mainframe z/VM panel. I cant login remotely via SSH because network conf file (/etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-qeth*) is missing an important " symbol.

IPADDR="192.168.1.233

Typical SED command. Example to change ip from .233 to .234
sed -i ifcfg-qeth* -e 's/233/234/g'

but to add symbol " will not work straight away because ' and " is part of SED input.

Solution : use " twice, like this.
sed -i ifcfg-qeth* -e 's/233/234""/g'

Result :
IPADDR="192.168.1.234"

I was unable to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows XP on my HP nx6310 laptop. Error displayed is that no hard disk was found.

Solution : Disable SATA Native Mode in BIOS setting.

Linux SysLog

Linux system log function is to record every activity that took place in a server. It provides information about who logs in or what program is being executed and at what time. I found out sometime ago that someone tried to hack into my server using root id and guessing passwords from the system log. To solve that problem, I disable root id from remote login and a waiting period of 5 minutes if number of tries with wrong password exceeded 3 times.

By default, linux syslog will create a MARK in the log file every 20 minutes just to inform you that it is running in the background. This can make the log file, cluttered and harder to read. Just change this default interval into something better like once every 3 hours (180 minutes) with a command like this.

# /sbin/syslogd -m 180

to view the last 50 lines of the log messages, type this :
# tail -n 50 /var/log/messages

IRC with Opera browser

I'm not a frequent chatter. If I feel like chatting online, yahoo messenger is for sure the only choice I know. However public chatrooms are very limited and quite a limited number of users allowed in a room.

Today is the first time (after quite some time) that I'm (back) on IRC. First I browse for IRC clients that is available because mIRC, a popular client is actually not a freeware. To my surprise, IRC Client is included in Opera browser. (I'm using Opera as my default browser because Firefox is not too efficient on memory and sometimes unable to display certain webpages correctly. There is also IRC client in Firefox addons).

Here's simple guide on using IRC in Opera.
-Tools - Mail and Chat Account
-fill in your name, email and nickname
-choose a server. I choosed Dalnet Asia
-join a room. The only room I know is "kampung"

Thats it. You can now start chatting with other users.
Dont ask me about IRC commands... I'm a newbie too...

Playing Videos on Linux Fedora 8

Configuring Fedora 8 to play videos is one of the toughest task. This
is because Redhat & Fedora are designed not for entertainment and in
respect of multimedia license and copyright issues.

Here's a list of task I performed to enable my laptop to play MPEG, AVI,
FLV and WMV files.

1. install repositories of livna
#wget http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
#rpm -ivh livna-release-8.rpm

2. install pulseaudio-libs
-due to dependency problem during mplayer installation
-download and install pulseaudio-libs-0.9.8-5.fc8.i386.rpm from

3. install lzo and libdvdnav-4 required by mplayer

-lzo-2.02-3.fc8.i386.rpm
-libdvdnav-4.1.2-2.fc8.i386.rpm

4. install mplayer (multimedia player) package

Installing a dual booting Linux & WinXP on my laptop is fairly easy for me. But configuring it afterwards to suit my daily work/leisure needs is quite hard. Heres the solution I got to set up internet connection which main problem is unrecognised DNS server list.

-edit the file

Playing MP3 in Linux-Fedora

Using both LAN and WIFI

My work requires me to connect to a Server via Local Area Network. But to browse the internet, I had to plug it off and switch to a Wireless Network. I found a way to use both LAN and WIFI at the same time by configuring the Routing Table. Its easier in Linux/Unix environment.
After searching for quite some time, I've finally succeeded to apply the same method in Windows. So here's the commands :

1. Create routing of 10.23.179.100 to use gateway 10.23.184.1 using network card no.3
ROUTE ADD 10.23.179.100 10.23.184.1 METRIC 25 IF 0X3
Note : if the above command failed, type again without the "IF 0x3"

2. Create 192.168.1.1 as default gateway, ie using the internet
ROUTE ADD 0.0.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1

3. Display the routing table.
ROUTE PRINT

Ping to both the local server ip and Yahoo website to check the connection.

www.meebo.com is a website where you can easily logs into instant messenger service without having to install any program into the computer. Especially when you're using public computer at cybercafes, schools or universities. It's also a simple solution if office network blocks all IM protocols.

As for me, i had to use meebo whenever i'm running on linux. Yahoo messenger for linux doesn't work. Gaim (another multiple service messenger) runs well but not if i'm behind a proxy server.

it took me months to figure out how to solve this question... so i thought it would be worth posting it on my blog

Question:
If a raster scan display monitor with a size of 10 inch (height) x 12 inch (width), with a resolution of 120pixel per inch and frame buffer bit depth of 6 bit per pixel. How much is the frame buffer size in KB ?

Answer :
10x12x120x6/8 = 10,800 byte/1024 = 10.55 KB

Umailer - easy smtp email

i can't send email using my company's mail from outside! smtp port was closed to reduce the risk of virus & spam. login thru webmail function takes forever...

so here's the solution. i receive my email as usual using outlook... but wherenever i need to reply, i'll just run this UMAILER program. it acts much like a fakemail program. using free smtp relay option automatically from the internet.

i used to have my own fakemail program which i wrote using visualbasic some time ago (with its own built in smtp engine). but i've lost it... rewritting the whole program might takes few hours, and i'm terribly busy with lots of things to do right now.

flashget - my favourite download manager

i download a lot!! be it an mp3, videoclips from youtube or even a 700MB latest linux iso files. downloading using the usual right click with internet browser may seems to take forever. if you suddently get disconnected, you'll have to start it all over again.

that's when a download manager program would come in handy. while most of other download managers like GetRight are usually comes with a price after a trial period ended, FLASHGET, my favourite download manager is free!!

and it has never let me down. downloading a 700MB linux iso files from the internet could complete in few hours at a speed of up to 100KBps, usually 4 simultanous connection for the same file. i can even stop and resume my downloads whenever i want to.

www.youtube.com is a place where you can upload your own personal video or watch others. its also actually a place where you can find nice MTV video clips.

normally, you are only allowed to watch it. but with some tricks & effort you can actually download and save it to your computer.

here's how to do it.
1. open www.youtube.com and search for a song. eg: mawi kian
2. copy the link location. example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ13ff3P9sI
3. open www.videodl.org -- paste the link and click [get it]
4. wait until a green [download link] appears.
then right clik and choose save target as...
5. rename the file as .flv (its a flash video type)
example : mawi-kian.flv
6. open the file with Riva FLV player or VLC player.
Or you can even convert it to MPG format using RivaEncoder. (download the program, choose input=mawi-kian.flv output=mawi-kian.mpg)

Netsh - change ip address

my work requires me to be at two different office. one at putrajaya and another in kl. both office is using different set of ip for local network. its too much trouble having to set my ip manually everytime.

using netsh from command prompt will make this task easier. just type this in command prompt, or you can save it as executable batch file.

netsh interface ip set address name="Local Area Network" static 192.168.0.15 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1 1
netsh interface ip set dns "Local Area Network" static 192.168.0.13

or if you want to get ip automatically from dhcp server
netsh interface ip set address name="Local Area Network" dhcp

it has been quite some time before i decided that i need to have my own blog. no, i am not a frequent blog reader. i never actually read any blog by purpose. but, i had to admit.... everytime i need to search for any information on the internet, frequently i get the answer from someone's blog writting.

so i figured out that blogging isn't just another internet trend... its a place for knowledge and experience sharing. while most of blogs that i came across was too dull... nothing more than just a daily clubbing, party-going, spoilt rich teenagers.... i decided that my blog should be about computers other than my thoughts and everyday life.
